E-Mobility Adoption in Tanzania #1
How can e-mobility contribute to healthier and greener living conditions in African cities?
Fast urbanization rates and rapid growth of motorized traffic across the African continent lead to high levels of pollution and pose serious risks for people’s health, and the environment.
One of our entrepreneurs in residence, Tanzania-based eMobility as a Service startup Greenfoot, is working to transform Africa’s consumer markets by providing local businesses with affordable transportation solutions powered by 100% electric micro-mobility. Joining hands, Greenfoot and the A2EI are collaborating on a series of publications analyzing the feasibility and viability of e-mobility business models for East Africa.
In our first brief paper on the topic, we look at “boda bodas” (Swahili for motorcycle taxis) – a common means of transport in both rural and urban areas of East Africa. In many instances, boda boda riders cannot afford to buy their own motorcycles, but instead rent them for a daily rate from the owner. We wanted to see if there is a viable business case for electric motorcycles to replace petrol motorcycles which are leased by their owners and operated by riders as a taxi.
