Report on Electric Cooking by IRENA & A2EI Launched at COP
A new report on electric cooking written by authors at A2EI and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was announced this week at COP28 at a high-level panel featuring IRENA’s Deputy General Director Gauri Singh.
The report investigates the global landscape for electric cooking and assesses countries’ access levels and climate commitments. It finds that there are opportunities to increase commitments towards scaling-up electric cooking, especially given that cooking represents 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions and has positive co-benefits related to health, gender, and the environment. The report also discusses the global financial landscape for electric cooking and identifies barriers that limit or restrict financial flows that are necessary for scaling up electric cooking. Following this, the report outlines three strategies for scaling up finance for renewables-based electric cooking that leverage opportunities in the private sector, the electricity sector, and carbon finance. The report also creates country profiles and action plans for a number of IRENA members that have opportunities for scaling up electric cooking.
